Suriati Abas, Ph.D. is an assistant professor at State University of New York (SUNY) Oneonta's School of Human Ecology, Education and Sports Studies. Her interdisciplinary and community-engaged scholarship utilizes the cross-sections of critical, multimodal and spatial literacies. Abas has published dozens of articles in peer-reviewed journals, edited book chapters and several scholarly multimodal platforms. She has received multiple awards and recognitions for her research and service record as an early career scholar and her pioneering public engagement work.
Abas is a Co-editor of an upcoming edited volume, "Reimagining Literacy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI) - Theory and Practice", (Routledge, anticipated 2025), She also serves as the New York State Reading Association (NYSRA) Council Coordinator. She was the Regional Director for Greater Thousand Island and North Country Literacy Council. Prior to joining the academia, she was an elementary and middle school teacher..
EDUCATION
I am an international scholar residing and working in the United States. I graduated with a Ph.D. in Literacy, Culture and Language Education from Indiana University, USA, with a minor in Inquiry Methodology. I also hold a Master of Arts (MA)in Applied Lingustics and an honors degree in Education (concentration: English Language & Literature) from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. RESEARCH
Areas of interest:critical literacy, multimodality, linguistic landscapes, Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy, children’s literature and teacher education.
My research work revolves around within school and in out-of-school context. I am involved in several educational research projects in the U.S. and beyond. Most of them are drawing from the courses that I teach and they have a social justice orientation. Some of the funded research projects that are on-going include:
